Tears began to well up in my eyes as my uni lecturer, Dr Mike Bossley, showed our class images of dolphins that had been kept at theme parks.

Listen to Melody discuss her writing process and upcoming projects.
Melody learns about how the Port River dolphins, which she spent decades advocating for, are dying mysterious deaths. This prompts her to write an article for Australia’s national newspaper, ‘The Australian’, in which she shares for the first time her extraordinary relationship with a wild, injured solitary dolphin that helped her heal from significant childhood trauma. She hopes the article will bring more attention to the plight of Adelaide’s dolphins and help others impacted by domestic violence. The article sparks nationwide interest and inspires her to write her memoir, ‘A Dolphin Called Jock.’
Melody leaves her job to complete her memoir and lands a publishing deal with respected publishers, Allen and Unwin.
Her memoir, ‘A Dolphin Called Jock’ is published across Australia and New Zealand and in 2023 it is released internationally under another title: ‘The Dolphin Who Saved Me’. The book is endorsed by a plethora of international writers and conservationists, including Dr Jane Goodall and Dr Marc Bekoff.
Melody is invited by Dr. Jane Goodall to join her newly formed Cetacean Committee. As co-chair of the committee, she begins a global campaign to end the captivity of dolphins and whales, collaborating closely with Dr. Goodall and scientists from around the world.
In addition, she writes her first children’s fantasy book, titled ‘A Cat Called Q and the Magic Globe’, which is published by 12 Willows Press in the United States in 2024.
She writes her second non-fiction book, titled ‘Sheltered’, after discovering the unprecedented increase in the number of companion animals being brought to shelters across Australia. She aims to raise awareness about this issue by emphasizing how animal companions often save the lives of those who rescue them. Additionally, she hopes to encourage more people to adopt rescue animals. ‘Sheltered’ was published by Ultimo Press in late 2024.
Melody takes a break from writing due to an unexpected battle with breast cancer. She continues her work with Dr Jane Goodall and the Cetacean Committee. She becomes the Ambassador for the KI/Victor Harbor Dolphin Watch and Retired Police Dogs of SA. She remains passionate about advocating for animals and the environment and is considering her next writing project.
